ALPHA ACID GLYCOPROTEIN
Alpha Acid Glycoprotein (AGP) is an acute phase protein manufactured in the liver and found in the blood of humans and animals. In the simplest form, detection of elevated levels of AGP has been shown to indicate background illness or other stressors when animals appear clinically normal. Acute phase proteins such as AGP are elevated during acute or chronic periods of inflammation or infectious diseases, following surgery, with malignant tumors, in autoimmune diseases, liver cirroses and with all types of stress in general. Other effects related to elevated levels of AGP are immunosuppression, poor response to vaccines, etc.
The unique thing about the acute phase protein and AGP testing is that it is a very early indicator of a change in condition, before antibodies are created by the immune system and before clinical symptoms are apparent. The assay is a SRID plate test containing ten wells each that only need 5ug/ml of plasma or serum applied to separately identified wells. They are then stored for twenty-four hours and interpreted. The kit comes with everything needed to complete the test.
Assays are available for bovine, porcine, equine, caprine, ovine, chicken, turkey, canine, feline, monkey, mouse, rat and human. This assay was originally created to monitor chemotherapy treatments in humans and to provide a window to the immune system. It has been reconfigured to identify stress levels in animals.
